In May of 2026, we visited Scotland. We spend a little time in Edinburgh, which is the first set of photos, and the bulk of our time in Nairn. We returned to Edinburgh prior to flying home. The photos in this gallery are a sampling of the trip, beginning with Edinburgh...
I was surprised in this old cemetery in Edinburgh to see so many tombstones fallen over or laying down. I later learned that heavy headstones had fallen on people, leading to a requirement that they be checked every five years. If a stone can be pushed over, it is laid down for public safety until either the family or other parties have it repaired so that it won't fall over. In many cases, no one can be found to pay to have the work done.
On to Nairn, with a stop first at Scone Palace...
We spend most of our time in Nairn and the surrounding area. Notice the character of the surf. The beach photos are all of the same stretch of beach in Nairn. The surf can be almost calm -- gentle lapping against the shore. Or, it can be amazingly fierce when the north wind whips it to a frenzy. The temperature varied from the 40s to the 50s Fahrenheit, and the wind was often over 20 mph. Still, some hardy souls swam in the water, or went sailboarding or wind surfing. Scots are hardy souls. The beaches are gentle and long, and at low tide extend out as much as half of a mile.
The remainder of the photos in this gallery were taken upon our return to Edinburgh. The first is of a statue along the Water of Leith Walkway that I did not expect. I took most of the remaining ones when I walked down to Princes Street Gardens.
